NEW POSITION (Extend Application Deadline)
TITLE: READING SPECIALIST Certified Position
Full Time, 10-month position Affiliation: Teachers’ Association Exceptional Education Department Location: Smith School-BOCES campus
DUTIES: Successful candidate must embrace an unyielding belief that all children can succeed and be
eager to support them in achieving their highest potential. The Reading Specialist will be responsible for
providing direct instruction to students individually or in small groups (push-in or pullout) and enable every
student to develop literacy skills with particular attention to decoding and early literacy skills for students
who have struggled to build those strategies through other interventions. The candidate is also responsible
for implementing a comprehensive literacy program in the building. The Reading Specialist will coach and
support teachers in best practices for literacy instruction for a variety of student populations and reading
abilities. Does other related duties as assigned.
Additionally, the successful candidate will:
- Identify literature for use across all content areas in support of the curriculum.
- Collaborate with, and coach teachers on, the use of assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
- Provide ongoing training and follow-up in the use of assessment tools.
- Participate in collaborative instructional planning; collaborate with the Instructional Coach.
- Conduct classroom visitations and provide regular feedback to teachers and administrators on the school’s literacy program.
- Maintain a comprehensive inventory of instructional materials and resources.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess New York State Teacher Certification in Reading K-12 OR Literacy B-6 and/or Literacy 5-12. New York State Teacher Certification in Special Education SWD 1-6 OR 7-12 Generalist OR Permanent Special Education Teaching Certification K-12 is preferred, but not required.
START DATE: As soon as possible.
SALARY: $46,000.00 (2019-2020 base salary) with additional salary credit for appropriate prior experience, Masters Degree and Grad Credits. Excellent benefits are available.
